My first love of STEM…
…got to be water💦 - more specifically ice!❄️
Making icecream 🍦 myself on a bowl of icecubes 🧊 with salt was the best thing my brother did to get me hooked on science😎
Oh and it also looks stunning under the electron microscope😍

#SciCommSeptember I wanted to be a vet, but couldn’t get into uni. So did science degree & became a vet nurse. Then met farmer husband, switched focus, Master of Ag while pregnant. 2 kids later, have done PhD to learn how to farm better 🌾Science is a fab journey #ILoveScience
#SciCommSeptember : Mythbuster time 🧐
You have to be 'The Best' in #STEM to do world-class research and do a #PhD . #phdvoice
FALSE- Human geography was my best subject, no qualifications in #nuclearsciences , recovered from disordered eating, diagnosed with #endometriosis 💪🏻
Thank you to everyone at CENTA 2021 Conference for all of the kind feedback on my poster and to infohackit for introducing me to exploring creative design skills in science communication. #FossilFriday #SciCommSeptember
#FunFact : moss growing in #Antarctica can be hundreds of years old! That's why we call them old-growth #moss forests.

#radiation myths: it makes you glow, it gives superpowers, it's unnatural. All untrue! Here are some facts:
- The radiation dose from a mammogram is more than my typical yearly dose working in an active lab
- The sun, the earth & our bodies are all radioactive

My office desk 👩💻
But can you tell what I study? 😅
Share your office or workspace for #SciCommSeptember and I’ll guess what you study!

Ok! Let's start with sea ice.
What is it?
Sea ice forms when seawater freezes.
It's found in the north in the Arctic Sea (and its margins) and around the huge icy southern continent of #Antarctica .

1. We don't have crows in Tasmania, only Forest Ravens (+ Little Ravens on King Island)
2. We all know they love roadkill and while they're clever at avoiding cars, they still get hit more than you think, so take care when you see them cleaning up our roads!

I miss my office and all my post-it notes and my wall calendar. I like to get people on their feet in meetings and writing down ideas so I can then surround myself with what we’re working on as I sort out how it’ll all work in with our other priorities #SciCommSeptember
I’d like to use #SciCommSeptember not to highlight myself or my research but to draw attention to #Mentalhealth of researchers. After a particularly bad #RUOKDay2021 with nhmrc releasing scores and reviews for investigator grants- I ask myself Why and I doing this? 🧵 1/9
I had a the best time talking to a year 3 class from London with Skype A Scientist! Always a pleasure to talk #dinosaurs #science and #archaeology ! #SciCommSeptember
#SciCommSeptember STEM Art! Here are some cool electron microscope images of materials I've made, and you can check out more from Daniel Oldfield.
Also shout out to some of my fav STEM art creators Dr Onisha Patel Dr Irene Suarez-Martinez Helen MC
#SciCommSeptember Why STEM? Because I believe all research is connected and together, we are working towards improving the quality of life for all. I feel happy when I contribute in any way to this big flow. Oh by the way thats a zebrafish lymphatic vessel that changed my life.

My favourite molecule, Fullerine also known as the Bucky Ball. I met my husband when he was doing fullerine research. Now a model sits in our garden!
It's prompt 11 and Myth Busting day!
What's a myth in your field or your world that you'd like to take the opportunity today to bust?
#SciCommSeptember
Ok let's get real for #SciCommSeptember , what's your desk/lab/bench/corner of the couch look like?
Where do STEM people really work...
#SciCommSeptember 11: I can't stand the myth that academia is a solo sport, and that there is little benefit in helping, supporting and leading others. It 👏 is 👏 a 👏 TEAM 👏 sport!!! When we work like a team everyone benefits. #bustamyth #AcademicTwitter
