#OTD in 1942, USS Wasp (CV-7) delivered a second load of desperately needed Spitfires to the besieged island of Malta. The effort prompted Winston Churchill to send the carrier a special message of thanks: 'Who said a wasp couldn't sting twice?'

Another great 'HMS Invincible was hit' picture which does the rounds is this... It's actually USS Wasp, hit around Guadalcanal on this day, September 15th, 1942. Again, this one does the rounds frequently. Another bogus #Falklands #mythbusted 🤣

On #TDIH in 1966, Gemini XII splashed down and Buzz Aldrin and Jim Lovell were welcomed aboard the recovery aircraft carrier, the USS Wasp. This mission marked the end of the Gemini program.

Concluding their successful 25-hour spaceflight, including a rendezvous with Gemini 7, Gemini 6A astronauts Wally Schirra and Tom Stafford splashed down in the Atlantic #OTD in 1965, and celebrated with a massive cake on the recovery ship USS Wasp.
