Before a service this week, a congregation member gathered his courage to tell me that I shouldn't live in a spirit of fear, presumably referring to my respirator.
I completed the verse for him, and told him that no, I have instead been given love, power, and self discipline.

Using full earth system sensitivity 7.8°C the earth was committed to 2°C in 1965.

Even using James Hansen's climate sensitivity of 6°C for fast AND slow feedbacks, 1988's 350ppm results in 2°C.

“This delay before the more severe effects materialise gives the illusion that climate change can be remedied or mitigated, when in reality all we can do is try to survive it”

The illusion of permanence makes us want to believe earth will always be habitable despite the evidence

The thing is they just don't want to.

It doesn't matter if you prove it's airborne.
It doesn't matter if you prove respirators work.
It doesn't matter if you prove it's still dangerous.

It's a lamentable graphic because it reinforces the false narrative that temperature tracks CO2 in real time.

We're actually only a 5th of the way to the 6°C equilibrium warming for the current amount of CO2. The other GHGs add a further 4°C.

The earth takes time to adjust to…

We're in the time lag between cause and effect. The cause can't be retrospectively negated. The effects can't be avoided. It's an inexorable physical process, as relentless as the passage of time.

“We're actually only a 5th (20%) of the way to the 6°C equilibrium warming for the current amount of CO2. The other GHGs add a further 4°C.”

Even if we began to reduce emissions, those future emissions add to the total GHGs in the atmosphere raising the eventual temperature.

Why don’t the 1% care about Extinction — aka the mega-scale impacts of climate change? There are two answers to that, the simple one, and the deep one. The simple one — and it’s a good enough answer, too — goes like this. Money and power.

Net zero is brilliant PR:

Committed warming is extremely bad for business. False hope is required to maintain the profitable status quo. So what was needed was a climate system free of committed warming, where warming can be slowed and even stopped through emissions cuts…
