“Even the largest companies will take their time adopting AI,” argue Donald Sull and Charlie Sull in a guest essay. “But cultural analysis is one of the few areas where it can be embraced right now” econ.st/49uFbUw 👇

And now in chart form! Tech's step back on Glassdoor's Best Places to Work for 2024 opened up space for industries like consulting, finance, retail & manufacturing to regain ground.

Similarly, this has also led to fewer Bay Area-headquartered companies featuring on the list:

Spent time today updating our forecasts of RN supply and demand in California, and then took another look at this: sloanreview.mit.edu/article/how-so…

Very aligned with what we see in the data. There are plenty of new enrollments, but the stress is showing and many RNs plan to change jobs.

We just launched the Nursing Satisfaction Index with MIT Sloan Management Review based on 150k Glassdoor reviews written by US nurses since COVID began.

The interactive index ranks 200 large health care employers based on how nurses rate leaders, toxic culture, workload and other aspects of job

A good overview of the state of the workforce - is there a shortage?

My California data says 'yes but it will end as new grad numbers catch up with the COVID resignations'. In the short-term, it's rough for employers, esp. hospitals.

Pharmacy technicians rank dead last out of 159 occupations in terms of job satisfaction post-COVID. And are 8th from the bottom.

Based on analysis of 17 million U.S. Glassdoor reviews from beginning of COVID through end of June 2023.

We have seen much about Bob Lucas' macro contributions these days, but he also had a highly influential contribution to the theory of the firm: the 'assigment theory of the firm', which explains, for instance, why Musk earns so much (and controls so many resources).

Neat paper teasing apart the relative importance of cognitive inertia versus founder's ability to drive change through credibility, ownership stake, relationships with stakeholders.

Neat paper analyzing free text of shareholder letters from 150 large US companies 1955-2020

Shows how stated goals (s/h value, ESG, etc) evolved over time

Even if goals are cheap talk, can provide insight into stakeholder pressures CEOs face over time

Econofact, which is a great website and podcast, just posted a short memo on uncertainty. With the SVB meltdown many measures of uncertainty are spiking again, so hopefully this is a useful overview.
