Why all the TJ’s (Part 10)

Too much HIGH INTENT throwing year round.

There are 5 VITAL cycles that an arm needs to go through AT LEAST twice a year:

1) Off-Season Progressive Build-Up
2) In-Season Maintenance
3) De-Load
4) Rest
5) Active Rest

'Are pitchers today throwing too hard for their own good? The simple answer is yes. But good luck getting anyone in the sport to slow them down, for one simple reason: Throwing hard works.'

Why all the TJ's (Part 9)

The Pitch Clock

It sure could be a minor reason, but instincts tell me it's a big deal.

There is a rhythm & feel to how an athlete RECOVERS organically after making a pitch w/ FULL EXERTION.

It's instinctive, intuitive, & the body has it's own clock.

Using the Jaeger Sports J-Bands to work on feeling a fast move back to the plate keeping the pocket square.

This drill really helped #Pack9 ⚾️ commit Danny Carnazzo keep the pocket square. Great day with him.

Thanks to @ctchngcoalition for chatting about this in depth

What a great article today by Devin Gordon in the The Atlantic: 'Arms are flying off their hinges'

An extremely in-depth and thought provoking piece about the rise in Arm Injuries/TJ's, and the possible sources.

Well done Devin...so impressive.

Why All The TJ's (Part 8)

Pitch Design/Metrics

It's human nature to want to get better...run faster, throw harder. But everything needs to be done GRADUALLY.

If u are working on a new pitch/grip (especially Sweeper, Slider), do it GRADUALLY.

Otherwise, the elbow gets SHOCKED.

Why all the TJ’s (Part 7)

Throwing with FULL intent when the arm isn’t FULLY stretched out ⬇️

Cardinal Rule:

Your arm should be FULLY stretched out to its ~ MAX distance (Long Toss) PRIOR to any type of High Intent throwing (Pull-Downs, Run & Guns, Mound Work).

PERIOD.

Why All The TJ’s? (Part 6)

Interesting how BP Pitchers make 300-400 throws a day, 6 days a wk for 40 years & don’t break down.

Interesting how many throws Catchers make each day (especially in Spring Training), & you rarely hear about catchers having TJ.

Why all the TJ’s? (Part 5)

Chasing Velo in the WRONG order.

FIRST, condition the Arm w/ a great BASE by progressively building Low Intent VOLUME.

THEN, integrate High Intent Days no more than 2x a week.

Focus on CONDITIONING (Process) & the VELO takes care of itself (Results)

Why all the TJ’s (Part 4)

1) Too much focus on HIGH INTENT throws (PR’s, Pull-Downs, Run & Guns)…not enough focus on LOW/MED INTENT, VOLUME throws.

Simple formula for P’s:

- 5 Days of Low/Med Intent, Volume throws
- 2 Days of High Intent throws (after full distance Long Toss)

“Baseball has killed Starting Pitching with all of its people, tinkering & screwing around with something that was fine for 120 years, & the last 30 years, Starting Pitching has just been a problem, one issue after another“
