Survey season is a busy time for our Wardens with early starts.
They’re delighted that this years Ring Ouzel surveys have shown 9 singing males. Not as high as some years when we have had an average of 12 but a welcome increase on last year when there was only 5.

Look out for signs at Stanage & Burbage indicating the presence nearby of Ring Ouzel nests & heed the directions to avoid those areas. Climbers & walkers have earned a good reputation for being willing to share our gritstone uplands with these special birds. 📸 Kim Leyland

Most of us would have still been asleep when Pete and team started their ring ouzel surveying for us this morning. An upland specialist & a red-listed and declining species, we hope the work of our project will help the 'mountain blackbird'. BirdGuides BTO DefraNature

April 9, 1774 – The ring-ouzel appears on it’s spring migration. It feeds now on ivy-berries, which just begin to ripen. Ivy blossoms in Octobr. In the autumn it feeds on haws, yew berries, &c.: also on worms, &c.

A late evening visit to Cleeve Common - still basking in hazy sun, but difficult to bird with winds gusting upto 40mph. Regular spots duly checked with no success, but patient searching finally produced a notable count of 12 Ring Ouzels, feeding in a sheltered gully

A single ring ouzel calling near Manstone Rock on our this morning.

These are the upland blackbirds which sadly are only passing through, as they are extinct as a breeding species in now.

Ringing recoveries of Ring Ouzels are rare but this bird, ringed in Rosedale in 2023, turned up in Belgium recently. Sadly dead, it seems to have been blown off course on its first return journey. Ouzels tend to migrate up the west side of Britain to their breeding ground.

Ring Ouzels are now back in Rosedale, a day earlier than expected. This male and female - most possibly a breeding pair - arrived together over night, confounding some bird books that mention females arriving two weeks after the males. Clearly this pair haven't read the script!

My recent contribution to the 'Nature Notes' column for the Wharfedale Naturalists in local papers.

Redwing and Fieldfare overwintering in Britain to be replaced by Ring ouzel in the spring. Climate change as one issue for Ring ouzel populations.

(Sound on)
If you're heading out for Ring Ouzel in the Peak District, do look out for colour ringed birds, and report all Rouzel sightings here tinyurl.com/peakouzels or email [email protected] .
Thanks everyone.

The first Ring Ouzel of the year was at St Aldhelm’s head this morning by Trev’s quarry. Found by Durwyn Liley. Spring migration slowly building.
