A trip to grey St Nonnas, Altarnun to see its marvellous C12. Font (with paint)! and early C16 carved benchends that are slowly being eaten by the worm from the bottom up- tsk.

St. Nonna's church, Altarnun. Its tower is among the tallest in Cornwall, generally a county of tall towers. Lower parts late C14, upper C15.

Callington
What a profile! Corner head with serpent and hexagram, typical of Altarnun-type fonts, but all different. Love finding them. 📸: my own

Could not choose between these so you get two of the best Cornish bench ends in one: Altarnun 1510-1530 'Robert Daye maker of this work' and the Mermaid of Zennor C15. Both so beautiful.

On West Moor near Altarnun, there is a Bronze Age cairn cemetery consisting of a group of 3 low platform cairns
One cairn was located by fieldwork in 1974, and the others in 1983

Enjoyed viewing the late medieval wood carvings on the ends of pews at St Nonna’s Church (the ‘Cathedral on the Moor’), Altarnun, Cornwall. The iconography was imaginative & light hearted - I especially liked the musicians!

Altarnun is one of my new favourite villages. Helps that the spring weather really put on a show.

Looking towards St Nonna's Church, the “Cathedral of the Moor”. Norman origins but it’s the surviving woodwork inside that really has to be seen.
