And here is a whole-mount confocal image of the light organ (in the upper lip) of biolum ostracods. Microscopy and staining performed in Dr. Steffen Harzsch group with the help of Dr. Georg Brenneis and Dr. Jakob Krieger. The biolum mucus gets secreted from tusks and nozzles!

🚨 New article 🚨

We study the diverse fossil record (charophytes, leaves, molluscs, ostracods, cladocerans, insects, and fish) of a new paleolake from the lower Miocene of Spain, focusing on the taphonomy and paleoecology of this new site.

Today’s little adventure on the Isle of Purbeck. Dozens of stromatolites, literally billions of ostracods, calcitised evaporites, paleosols, and much more. A grand day out.

Again, too long time without tweeting about . Here, a beautiful Amphissites centronotus from the Permian of Turkey (about 280 million years ago, 0,5mm in length). These ostracods have been deeply affected by the end-Permian extinction, about 252 million years ago.

This Greenops trilobite is a bit beat up, but the small dots on this plate are Ostracods (sometimes known as seed shrimp). I found this on the Lake Erie shoreline near Buffalo, New York. It's Devonian aged Wanakah Mb.

Happy Anniversary! One year ago today, we collected ostracods from thermal hot springs. They live comfortably at 40++C and have survived in small jars munching on cyanobacteria. America's Next Top Model System??

A little obsessed with my , a paper microscope with its own light source that reaches x140 magnification. Hopefully it will be useful for looking at ostracods in the field.
