This video demonstrates how heavy rain on bare peatlands leads to runoff and peat erosion.

However, planting Sphagnum slows the flow of water! This benefits ecosystem services like flood management and water purification🌊

So, let's get restoring!

Would you be brave enough for this job? Rhododendron is an attractive plant, but this non-native species will out compete native species if left unchecked, drying out peatland and undoing our work to re-wet the peat and increase new peat formation

Another decade(ish) old dam up on Cray Moss doing its thing. Certainly the amount of water it’s holding is a facet of weather but there’s so much sediment trapped and so much vegetation growing behind it (right hand side is “upstream”).

These coir logs break up the flow of rainfall over the bog, slowing its drainage into rivers below and helping to mitigate flooding downstream. Although they stand out when first placed, they'll gradually weather into the landscape

As it's Half Term, the van will be out and about throughout the week. Come down and experience our 'bog in a van' and find out all about the importance of looking after our precious peatlands.

In Venice last June I met the most amazing group of champions & we co-designed which basically says ‘we care for peatlands’. I love wetlands: they are true wonderlands. Especially Irish wetlands 🐸 ⁦UN Environment Programme⁩ ⁦⁦GreifswaldMireCentre

It feels like the long days of Summer are a distant memory now but we've been reminiscing about all the people we had the privilege to meet this year while we were out and about in the Bogtastic Van.

Amazing day exploring blanket bogs 🌱 in the Azores 🇵🇹 Really good cover of Sphagnum moss, but very different to the blanket bogs that we can find in 🇮🇪🇬🇧🇪🇸
